Private Pilot License – Scenario in India

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

Private Pilot License - License to fulfill your dreams of adding WINGS

Among the Pilot License options available in India, most common license is Commercial Pilot License (CPL). This license is required to fly aircraft to earn money. Therefore, all airline Pilots, chartered aircraft Pilots and Flight Instructors hold minimum CPL.

The other licence is Private Pilot License (PPL). PPL allows you fly aircraft alone, with family & friends or to share cost of operating. PPL does not allow to earn money from flying aircraft using PPL. PPL is a beautiful privilege which can be availed by people who sometime in their life wanted to become a Pilot or people who wish to have a taste of flying.

Earlier days, PPL was considered to be affordable by wealthy people only. However, with increasing affordability, PPL is very much in reach of middle class. However, in India still there is lack of awareness about PPL and privileges associated with the same. Still perception lasts that learn to fly is either to become Airline Pilot or Air force Pilot. Since there were not enough candidates for PPL, the same resulted in shortage of supply of services.

Among all available Flight schools in India, Hardly anyone claims to offer specialized course for PPL. Flight school Charter of services carries PPL. However, there is no specialized course offering. Candidates who approach flight schools to initiate the PPL course are usually discouraged to join citing reasons like unavailability of slots etc. Few avenues enroll such candidates but don’t make them aware of realities and more interested in deposit of fees. Instances have been reported where PPL candidates who are working professionals are asked to be present at flight schools like regular CPL students including ground classes. No proper information has been passed on to the PPL candidates for efficient utilization of money and time. These kinds of ways make the candidate demotivated over a period of time, eventually drifting away from the course. Another reason for low PPL enrollment is lack of flight training schools at cities. Most of the major cities lack a flight training school including New-Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai. Majority of the flight schools are in far off places which are not that approachable.

Considering above mentioned and other factors practically experienced while doing PPL course, OFLY curates a custom PPL program for people who wish to fulfill their dream of becoming a PILOT.

At OFLY, we do not believe in one size fits all. Each candidate is assessed for her/his skills, limitations, requirements and expectations. Based on the same, a program is curated for best fit. We offer end to end program in modular fashion. OFLY objective is to disseminate fair and genuine information regarding Aviation. We do not represent any specific flight school.
