Student Discovery Flight: A First Step into the World of Aviation

Experience aviation before deciding your path.

For many students, aviation feels distant, something seen from airport terminals or through videos online. A Student Discovery Flight changes that completely. It transforms aviation from an idea into a real, lived experience.

Designed as a first exposure, a discovery flight allows students to understand aviation from the inside without commitment, pressure, or prior experience.

Why a Discovery Flight Matters ?

Career decisions are often influenced by perception rather than understanding. A discovery flight helps students replace assumptions with experience. Instead of imagining what flying might be like, students get to see, feel, and understand how aviation actually works.

This experience is valuable whether a student dreams of becoming a pilot or simply wants to explore aviation as a field. Many students discover interests in engineering, operations, safety, or systems thinking areas they had never considered before.

What the OFLY Student Discovery Flight Includes

Each discovery flight is structured, guided, and conducted under instructor supervision to ensure both safety and learning.

1. Pre-Flight Session

Students are introduced to the basics of aviation, including how light aircraft operate, safety principles, and what to expect during the flight.

2. Pre-Flight Briefing

Before stepping into the aircraft, students receive a clear briefing covering:

  • Flight plan overview

  • Safety procedures

  • Roles of the pilot and instructor

This helps students feel prepared and confident.

3. Aircraft Parts & Systems Explanation

Students are guided through key aircraft components, wings, control surfaces, cockpit instruments, and engine basics, connecting theory with real hardware.

4. 60-Minute Flight Experience

Students experience approximately 60 minutes of flying in a light aircraft, always under the supervision of a qualified flight instructor. During the flight, students observe how:

  • Controls affect aircraft movement

  • Communication and coordination take place

  • Decision-making happens in real time

Where appropriate, students may experience basic control inputs under instructor guidance.

5. Post-Flight Debrief

After landing, the instructor discusses the flight, answers questions, and helps students reflect on what they observed and learned.

6. Certificate of Completion

Each student receives an OFLY Certificate of Completion, marking their first structured aviation experience.

A Meaningful First Step

A discovery flight is not about deciding a career in one day. It is about starting with understanding. For many students, this single experience becomes the moment aviation shifts from curiosity to clarity.

For parents and educators, it offers reassurance that exploration can happen safely, responsibly, and meaningfully.
